Built For Salt Air, Styled For Joy: Concrete Sinks in Puerto Rico

Some projects start with a mood. HiBird Hotel started with a promise: honor a 1950s modern tropical building—and make every guest feel like they’ve arrived somewhere joyful, soulful, and unmistakably Caribbean.

For Lulu Puras, the interior design firm behind the project, that meant leaning into the building’s original architecture as the foundation for everything that followed: material selections, furniture silhouettes, color palette, and styling. HiBird isn’t a typical place to stay; it’s an apartment building offering apartments, studios, and rooms for rent—blending hotel amenities with the comfort and warmth of home. And in that kind of hybrid hospitality experience, the details matter. Especially the ones guests touch every day.

That’s where the sinks come in.

Materials That Don’t Flinch

In tropical climates, interiors have to perform as beautifully as they photograph. Between humidity, salty air, constant turnover, and daily cleaning, a space can’t rely on delicate finishes or precious materials to carry the design.

HiBird’s clients were clear from the start: choose materials that stand the test of time and require minimal maintenance.

Concrete became the sensible solution—not as an industrial afterthought, but as a design-forward, long-life material that could hold its own in Puerto Rico’s climate while supporting Lulu Puras’ vibrant, modern tropical vision.

That’s the Trueform sweet spot: our craft, your vision—delivering bespoke pieces that fit like a glove, from color to form to functionality.

Why Concrete Was the Right Material for HiBird’s Custom Bathroom Sinks

Lulu Puras’ approach was rooted in durability and intention. Concrete checked every box:

  • Longevity: Built to hold up in high-use, hospitality-style environments
  • Low maintenance: A practical win for owners and operations
  • Design flexibility: Custom forms, proportions, and colors without compromising performance
  • Aging gracefully: A material that maintains its presence over time instead of feeling “worn out”

Concrete didn’t just support the project—it reinforced the entire objective: a space that feels warm and welcoming, but still built for real life.

The Teal Moment: When A Sink Becomes a Focal Point

In several HiBird rooms, the bathroom sink isn’t tucked away as a supporting player—it’s a focal point. So while concrete solved the performance brief, color spoke to the emotional one.

The Lulu Puras team wanted a bold tone that would complement their warm palette and still stand confidently on its own. The answer was a teal blue that evokes the Caribbean ocean—vibrant, dimensional, and connected to the surrounding environment.

In other words: not just “a blue sink,” but a design gesture that makes the room feel placed—like it belongs to Puerto Rico, not just in Puerto Rico.

Why Lulu Puras Partnered with Trueform Concrete

Custom work is only as good as the collaboration behind it. Lulu Puras chose Trueform Concrete because the partnership matched the project’s pace and precision:

  • Flexibility with custom designs
  • Ability to collaborate on custom color
  • Reasonable production timelines
  • Budget-conscious craftsmanship
  • Professionalism end-to-end

When designers have a clear vision, the build partner has to be equally committed to bringing it to life—accurately, reliably, and without diluting what makes it special.

HiBird delivered what Lulu Puras envisioned—and exceeded expectations.

That’s not a small statement. Most custom projects come with a “next time we’d adjust…” footnote. Not here. Lulu Puras shared that they wouldn’t change anything about the process or final result.

That kind of satisfaction is what happens when a material choice is aligned with the environment and the story the space is trying to tell.

What’s Next: Decorative Concrete Beyond Sinks

For Lulu Puras, concrete isn’t a one-off. It’s a material that makes sense in Puerto Rico—and one they want to push further.

Future explorations include:

  • Fixed and decorative lighting
  • Small furniture pieces
  • Sculptural decorative objects

Concrete has a rare ability to be both practical and poetic. In the right hands, it becomes more than a surface—it becomes part of the identity of the space.

What Designers Can Take from HiBird

HiBird is a reminder that the most memorable hospitality spaces don’t rely solely on big gestures. They’re built on repeatable, tactile moments—materials that look good, feel grounded, and hold up to real use.

A custom concrete sink in a teal ocean tone might seem like a minor, inconsequential detail. But at HiBird, it’s a design anchor: functional, climate-smart, and emotionally tied to place.
