The Power of Partnership in Design

Exceptional design doesn’t happen in isolation—it’s the result of trust, communication, and a shared creative vision. For Tom and Leighann Markalunas of Markalunas Architecture Group, the most successful projects emerge when clients bring ideas and energy to the process.
"We are client-focused. We listen, we interpret, and we collaborate," says Tom. "When the client brings creativity, trust, and enthusiasm, it becomes something truly extraordinary." he says.
This philosophy came to life in a recent project in resort community, Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina, where traditional low-country architecture was reimagined through the lens of modern materials and design innovation.

Merging Visions: A Modern Take on Low-Country Aesthetic
Palmetto Bluff is steeped in Southern architectural tradition—clapboard exteriors, expansive porches, and classic gabled rooflines define the region’s aesthetic. Yet, for this project, the homeowners sought a fresh perspective, incorporating metal and concrete to imbue the home with a refined, contemporary sensibility.
"The ongoing conversation was about how to modernize the look while honoring the region’s architectural language. Material selection played a pivotal role in achieving that balance," says Tom, an architect and owner of Markalunas Architecture Group.
"Concrete, glass, and metal are often thought of as rough and industrial, but in this home, it added a layer of sophistication and craftsmanship that elevated the entire design," says Leighann, interior designer.
By fostering an open dialogue between the client and design team, they were able to refine every detail, challenging conventions to create a home that was both contextually respectful and boldly forward-thinking.

Intentionality Through a Collaborative Process
Beyond aesthetics, the home was meticulously designed to accommodate a dynamic lifestyle. The homeowners, frequent hosts of corporate events and large family gatherings, required a space that was as functional as it was visually compelling.
Constraints, such as a limited lot size and privacy considerations, became opportunities for creative problem-solving. Every element of the home, from the junior suites to the outdoor entertaining areas, was designed with purpose, ensuring an effortless flow between spaces and an enhanced sense of livability.

Weaving a Narrative through Design
The client’s background in textiles deeply influenced the design narrative, bringing layers of heritage and authenticity to the space. Their love for South Carolina’s heritage in textiles became an important part of the design and decor. Vintage details became a shared passion between designer and homeowner, resulting in a space filled with meaningful elements.
"We all love a good story, and incorporating found objects and reclaimed materials brought that narrative to life in the home," says Leighann. "These design choices became talking points—pieces of history that spark conversation."

The Role of Concrete in Collaboration
Concrete became a defining material in this project, not as a singular dominant element, but as a medium for artistic expression. Trueform Concrete worked closely with the design team to craft bespoke elements that seamlessly integrated into the home’s overall vision.
- A striking entry wall that establishes a refined yet contemporary first impression.
- A linear fireplace with a floating hearth, balancing modernity with warmth and texture.
- A wet bar counter, blending concrete with reclaimed oak from a bourbon rack house, complete with fire-branded markings that tell a rich story of heritage and craftsmanship.
- An outdoor fireplace surround, providing both durability and a sculptural focal point for gatherings.
"Concrete gave us the ability to problem-solve and be creative," says Leighann. "Trueform made it possible to achieve a range of geometries, textures, and finishes that elevated the entire project."
“Tom and Leighann are the ideal collaborators because they intuitively grasp concrete as a raw material versus the object it eventually becomes” remarks Paul Grech, Creative Director at Trueform. “Holding this perspective allows designers to apply the material across a broad range of applications and with a variety of visual and tactile expressions - which is, after all, the chief benefit of using concrete.”

Crafting Spaces Together
At its core, this project is a testament to what is possible when designers, clients, and material specialists collaborate with intention. By seamlessly blending tradition with innovation, personal narratives with modern materials, the team created a home that feels both timeless and strikingly contemporary.
