What is a concrete floating sink?

Concrete floating sinks are an innovative and aesthetically pleasing addition to modern bathroom designs. These sinks are made from lightweight glass fiber-reinforced concrete. The floating effect is achieved by clever design and engineering, often utilizing hidden support structures or brackets on the wall, thus its alternative name: wall-mounted sink.

Why wall mounted concrete sinks?

A concrete floating sink has many benefits:

Space-Saving

Wall-mount concrete sinks are ideal for small bathrooms or powder rooms where floor space is limited. Since they don't require a bulky vanity or cabinet, they create a more open and spacious feel in the room.

Customizable Height

When installing a wall-mount sink, you have the flexibility to position it at a height that suits your needs, whether you prefer a standard height or something higher or lower for accessibility reasons.

Ease of Cleaning

With no pedestal or vanity to work around, cleaning the floor beneath a floating concrete sink is much easier. This can be particularly advantageous in commercial settings where hygiene is crucial.

Modern Aesthetic

Floating sinks often have a sleek and minimalist design that complements contemporary bathroom styles. They can give a bathroom a more modern and airy look compared to traditional pedestal or vanity sinks.

Accessibility

Mounting the sink on the wall can make it more accessible for individuals with mobility issues or those who use wheelchairs, as it allows for greater clearance underneath the sink. This is especially relevant in commercial spaces - where ADA guidelines need to be observed.

Versatility

Wall-mounted concrete sinks come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and materials, making them suitable for a wide range of design preferences and architectural styles. This permits greater flexibility in bathroom & powder room design.

Installation

The method used to install the sink is of paramount importance. Inadequate support can lead to issues down the road—or even worse, damage and injury. Here are two common methods for installing concrete floating sinks:

Brackets

Brackets attach either directly to either wood or steel studs inside the wall. This method completely conceals the brackets from view (unless you look under the sink). Trueform uses engineered steel brackets for maximum strength and durability. We have also developed proprietary brackets for mounting to walls made of concrete masonry or other substrates.

3-Wall System (Built-In)

A concrete sink that nestles into three walls creates a built-in, recessed look. It also utilizes three walls for support- typically in the form of wood or steel cleats – and is thus a stronger and more durable method of installation. Additional wall brackets may or may not be required depending on the size and design of the sink. Similarly, a hybrid approach using support brackets and wall cleats can be used for when the sink touches two walls.

Concrete Wall-Mounted Sink Trends

The malleability of concrete affords myriad shapes, sizes, colors, and styles. The sky is really the limit designing and fabricating with concrete. It also allows for customization of all kinds - from debossing shapes and graphics to unique and alternative finishes.

Some of the hottest trends in floating sinks include:

Bold, Fresh Colors

Trueform can match any Benjamin Moore paint color in concrete. Though these don’t come standard, color is one of the most frequently requested customizations

Shapes

Wild shapes and designs among concrete wall-mounted sinks can range from a replica of a topographical map of a canyon to a hand-hewn wood basin and everything in between. If you can imagine it, Trueform artisans will do their best to bring your vision to life. Simply talk with our team to discuss your ideas.

Shallow Basins

Another favorite is the shallow basin concrete floating sink. Wider and shallower, these sinks are ultra contemporary in style and can set the tone for your bathroom design. Most standard shallow sinks are five to eight inches deep. With concrete you can specify a basin style or depth that suits your specific needs.

Infinity Sinks

Like the shallow sink basin, an infinity design aims to minimize the perception of basin depth. Such designs deliberately blend the transition from the countertop to the basin, making it difficult to determine where one begins and the other ends. Other designs will extend the edges of the basin all the way to the perimeter of the countertop so that the entire sink presents as the basin. In both cases, certain functionalities – such as usable countertop space – might be sacrificed in pursuit or style.

As we conclude our exploration of concrete floating sinks, it is evident that these fixtures represent more than just a functional element in a bathroom—they are a statement of modern design innovation. Their ability to seamlessly blend style with practicality while also maximizing space and durability makes them a compelling choice for those seeking to elevate their bathroom aesthetics.

Whether in residential homes, luxury hotels, or avant-garde commercial spaces, concrete floating sinks stand as a testament to the ongoing evolution of interior design. As we look to the future, it's clear that these versatile fixtures will continue to inspire creativity and redefine the boundaries of contemporary bathroom design.
